JORDAN VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER IS THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN UTAH TO OFFER ROBOTICS-ASSISTED SURGERY USING THE CORITM SURGICAL SYSTEM, ADVANCING HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[West Jordan, UT, September 23, 2021] – The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons estimates knee replacement surgeries are expected to increase a staggering 189 percent between now and 2030 in the United States. In preparation for this dramatic increase, Jordan Valley Medical Center recently expanded its comprehensive orthopedic program to include robotics-assisted knee surgery. Orthopedic Surgeon Kevin Sagers, D.O. recently performed Jordan Valley’s very first robotics-assisted knee replacement surgery using the CORI™ Surgical System. This unique system, developed by Smith+Nephew, uses handheld robotics-assisted technology designed to help orthopedic surgeons plan and perform total and partial knee replacement procedures.

“I am very excited to be pioneering this new technology at Jordan Valley and Jordan Valley West Campuses.  It allows us to more accurately and precisely place our total hip and knee implants in a patient-specific manner, which in turn has shown to decrease recovery time and increase a patient’s ability to get back to the activities they have missed due to their arthritic pain,” states Dr. Sagers. “While robotic-assisted surgery is no longer necessarily “new,” the introduction of the CORITM Surgical System allows our patients access to the latest upgrades and advancements in the technology.”

According to Dr. Sagers, the CORITM Surgical System does not require the preoperative CT that other platforms use, decreasing cost and radiation to the patient. Additionally, this platform allows the surgeon to create a unique surgical plan using 3D digital modeling to develop a plan customized to the patients’ unique anatomy. This means the surgeon can perform the procedure more accurately than traditional knee replacement surgery. Using these technologies, patients can keep more of their natural bone and ligaments. This helps maintain more of a natural rhythm and step.

“Jordan Valley Medical Center and Jordan Valley Medical Center, West Valley are offering robotics-assisted surgery based on the overall potential benefits to our patients. Our community hospitals continue to offer high tech, cutting edge healthcare to the patients we serve,” said Jon Butterfield, President at Jordan Valley Medical Center.

Robotics-assisted hip and knee replacements using the CORITM Surgical System can be performed by Dr. Kevin Sagers, orthopedic surgeon.
